Shepherd’s Pie / Cottage Pie

GLUTEN FREE

Shepherd’s Pie aka cottage pie is a naturally gluten free meal that is delicious, hearty, and very comforting. When I first started going gluten free, I racked my brain for all my favorite meals that were rice or potato based. This is a healthy practice to do when you start the transition to gluten free because it shows you that you do not have to be punished to eat gluten free. Some of your favorite foods that you have always enjoyed are naturally gluten free and you now can give yourself permission to eat these meals more often. This thought process really helped my mind.

What ingredients are in this recipe?

Meat vegetable mixture- I typically use ground beef however traditionally it is made with ground lamb. For the vegetables in the meat sauce, I use garlic, peas, carrots, green beans, and corn. Feel free to substitute with the vegetables you prefer in a meat sauce. The most important part of the meat sauce is the Worcestershire sauce. It has a unique British taste that is very difficult to mimic. In a pinch you could substitute with soy sauce.

Mashed potatoes- I use Yukon gold potatoes, peel them, chop them up, boil and mash them. Make the potatoes how you prefer. I use light cream, a bunch of butter, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
